Phil Hay: This is what Bielsa didn’t like about Leeds loanee Izzy Brown

There is no question now that Izzy Brown was quite a flop at Elland Road last season after arriving on loan from Chelsea, the summer before.

After already carrying an injury as he completed his move, Brown was finally deemed fit to play back in December before he suffered another problem during a game for the Under-23 team.

The attacking midfielder made his first team debut – which happened to last only nine minutes – against QPR in February.

Following that cameo, Brown was not able to feature for the senior team until the second leg of the Championship play-off semi-final against Derby County, where he was briefly introduced in the second half of the game.

The 22-year-old had failed miserably to make his short spell with Leeds a memorable one. Indeed, one Leeds fan asked Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay about exactly what went wrong and he concluded that Bielsa was happy with the signing, but not with the performances he witnessed from Brown when he was actually fit to play.

“He was happy with the signing,” Hay said, “but ultimately once he got fit, he wasn’t at the level of intensity Bielsa looks for. Bielsa’s a stickler for hand running”.
