Emery admits he could play Arsenal centre-back as a midfielder

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has insisted that centre-back Calum Chambers will be considered for a role in midfield for the team if that becomes a necessity during the course of the campaign.

Emery’s men have been in erratic form thus far this season, but the struggles of their rivals in the race for a top four have spared their blushes.

Calum Chambers is back at the club this season after being sent out on loan to Fulham last year as the Cottagers were relegated from the Premier League following an underwhelming year.

The 24-year-old had been used sparingly by Unai Emery prior to his appearance against Aston Villa in the Premier League last Sunday.

Chambers’ excellent displays, when selected by his manager, have seen him move up in the pecking order at the Emirates stadium, especially with Ainsley Maitland-Niles now suspended for the clash with Manchester United on Monday.

Ahead of the Old Trafford trip, Emery has revealed that the Englishman will be considered for a role as a midfielder.

“He helped. He helped us in the training, in the dressing room and when you need him to play right back, centre back, left back like tonight [against Nottingham Forest], and we can use him in the midfield also.” Emery told the Arsenal official website

The Gunners are currently three points ahead of their next opponents in the Premier League.
