Martin Jol reveals how Tottenham have wasted move to sign Ajax player

Ex-Tottenham boss Martin Jol has highlighted why his former club appears to have missed out on a golden chance to secure the signature of Donny Van de Beek from Ajax this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino and his team were responsible for knocking Ajax out of Europe last season as a stunning hat-trick from Lucas Moura saw them snatch the edge in the tie, courtesy of the away goals rule.

With a wonderful campaign under their belt, the Dutch side now faces the danger of losing most of their prized assets to bigger clubs ahead of next season.

Donny Van de Beek happens to be among the players whom Ajax are at risk of losing this summer, due to the brilliant potential he has displayed.

But the fact that the rest of Europe has been tracking him means the midfielder’s price will now be high and that is why Martin Jol believes Spurs have missed out on signing him.

The Ex-Tottenham manager believes Van de Beek’s expensive price tag will be the limit for Tottenham, who refused to sign him when he was cheaper.

“Then it comes down to expertise. For example Van de Beek in the winter you could have bought him for much less because he wasn’t always in the team.” he said, as per Football.London

“That’s what scouts have to do, recognise the players, recognise the market. That is the only thing I can say because after it’s too late and Spurs won’t pay £50m or £60m.”
