‘He’s going to be a top player’: Carragher on potential Liverpool acquisition

Matthijs de Ligt has caught the eye of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who has shared his views on the talent of the Dutchman ahead of a long summer of speculation about the youngster’s future.

With Virigil Van Dijk already playing for the Reds, Liverpool might have some sort of advantage in possibly attracting De Ligt, to form an all-Dutch defensive partnership at Anfield next season.

Spanish outlet Sport has previously reported that Jurgen Klopp has joined the race to sign the young defender, who is currently the skipper of Ajax.

De Ligt was an absolute rock at the back for Ajax last term, as they made a stunning run all the way to the semifinal of the Champions League where they were defeated by Tottenham Hotspur on away goals.

The Dutch youngster will be pursued by Europe’s biggest clubs and that comes as no surprise to Jamie Carragher, who has stated that De Ligt is a player bound for greatness after the glimpses of pure quality that he has shown.

“You look at De Ligt and, for me, it’s almost a guarantee he’s going to be a top player. He’s a man.” the former Liverpool star said, as per the Daily Star,

“It’s unbelievable what De Ligt is doing at 19-years-old. The performances we saw him give in the Champions League were outstanding.”
